The Orihuela Costa is a beautiful 16km coastal region located on the vibrant Costa Blanca. Stretching from Torrevieja in the north to Mil Palmeras in the south, the Orihuela Costa is famous for its diverse coastline with both rugged cliffs and white sand beaches. The area also has the added benefit of being located between two large airports: Corvera and Alicante.
The region encompasses the areas of Villamartin, La Zenia and Playa Flamenca, so there is plenty to keep visitors and residents occupied. Here, we’ll look at some of the best places and activities in the region, whether you’re just visiting or thinking of moving.
Beaches
In most coastal areas in Spain, one of the highlights is always going to be the beaches. And Orihuela Costa is no different. The area is famous for its blue flag beaches with white sands and clear waters. Ideal for water sports, leisure activities, fishing or just relaxing, there are a wide variety of beaches on offer. Some of the most popular include Mil Palmeras, Cabo Roig, Playa Cala Capitan and Playa de La Zenia.
Golf Courses
Orihuela Costa is a superb destination for golf enthusiasts. It is home to numerous superb golf courses in Villamartin, Campoamor, Las Colinas and Las Ramblas. ‘Club de Golf Villamartín’ is a quality course with fine facilities, hosting the annual Mediterranean Open, whilst Las Ramblas is known for giving experienced golfers quite the challenge, so you have plenty of variety on offer. With 325 sunny days every year, you’re pretty much guaranteed the weather for an uninterrupted game as well.
Orihuela Costa Coastal Walking Path
This coastal walking path is a recently upgraded addition to the area. Stretching from Campoamor in the south and taking in La Zenia, Playa Flamenca and Punta Prima, this series of paths, walkways and boardwalks offers stunning views of coastal cliffs, beaches and marinas. There are plenty of viewpoints and some information boards along the way, and if you want to take things at a leisurely pace, you’ll be passing plenty of bars and cafes to help you on your way.
Villamartin
The prestigious area of Villamartín is a must-visit, with its relaxing and laid-back pace prevalent throughout. Located inland, just west of Torrevieja, it began as a small residential development in 1972, but has since grown into an attractive Mediterranean village. It is very popular with British and Scandinavian nationals, with a large population of expats residing here. The area is now alive with a huge variety of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants.
La Zenia
La Zenia is another area primarily populated by British and Scandinavian expats. It boasts 3 blue flag beaches and plenty to do for both permanent residents and holiday makers. There is an endless choice of cafes, restaurants and shops to explore, and is also home to the largest shopping centre in Alicante; Zenia Boulevard. This 161,000m2 shopping centre has great shops of all varieties (including a Primark!) as well as plenty to keep the whole family entertained, including bars, restaurants, play areas, a dancing fountain and a bowling alley. The main beaches in La Zenia are Cala Bosque and Cala Cerrada, with both offering plenty of space to soak in the sunshine and heat. If you enjoy the hustle and bustle of a traditional Spanish tourist resort, with an endless choice of buzzing restaurants and bars, then La Zenia is the place for you.
Playa Flamenca
A small beach and surrounding locality, Playa Flamenca is worth visiting in its own right, with plenty of nearby cafes and bars in the vicinity of the beach to enjoy. The beach itself is small and quieter than other local ones, being in a more residential area. There is also a bustling local street market held every Saturday morning selling everything from fresh fruit, vegetables and meat, to locally crafted unique clothing items and ornaments. And don’t forget to sample the local hot food stands along the way!
